The First Rule of Marketing From The Blues Brothers

by James Hooper

Often in life - and in movies - there are clear statements of the obvious things that actually work. As you decide to look for them, more insights appear. One such example is in the Blues Brothers movie. As we were browsing Youtube - some of this obvious became clearer.

There may be a structural change in the world right there. No longer do we 'put on a CD', but simply connect to the web -and expect places like youtube.com to have a video clip for most any music group we can think of.

Tonight we moved from Handel's Messiah to the ballad "Hallelujah" sung by various stars, to eventually The Blues Brothers. (Just scroll through 'related videos' to experience this experience.)

Marketing rules from the Blues? Yep. Watch the video clip and you will see what many businesses see on a daily basis - a lack of interest in their current product. What do Jake, Elwood and band do? They think - I wonder what this audience actually wants to hear. Then they test. [link:Blue Brothers]

Now just enjoy the video, and think about your marketing and how your market is responding to your "music".

Marketing can be simple. Once you have a chosen audience - determine what they want. The people in the your crowd have common interests - are you feeding that drive?

The first law of marketing is about the "WHO". Until you define your market - it is impossible to design a campaign that will reach them effectively.

Marketing does not always need to be bland and boring. Look for your marketing ideas in places other than texts and newspapers. Look in the movies, the music - and find some emotion that will shine in message. Same is lame.
